Why superlatives tell you nothing
Anyone can put “best” in an ad. What you want to know is whether the company will turn up, tell you the price first, do the job properly and stand behind it. None of that shows up in a slogan.
Signs of a trustworthy locksmith
Professional from the first call
They answer with a business name, ask sensible questions about your lock, give a realistic arrival estimate and quote a price before sending anyone. On arrival they show ID and ask for yours.
Reviews you can verify
Look at reviews on independent platforms and read the detailed ones, good and bad. A few honest complaints answered politely are more reassuring than a page of identical five-star comments.
Licensing and insurance
New Jersey requires locksmiths to be licensed. Ask for the licence number and check it with the state Division of Consumer Affairs. Ask whether they carry liability insurance too.
Red flags
- A generic name like “Locksmith Service” with no address or local presence
- A price on the phone that's far below everyone else's
- Refusal to quote before starting
- Unmarked vehicle and no ID
- Drilling a lock straight away on a simple lockout
- Pressure to buy expensive upgrades on the spot
Why local matters
A locksmith based in your city knows the area, is easier to reach after the job and has a reputation to protect. Some search listings are call centres that pass jobs to whoever is available, at whatever price that person sets.
