A calm voice and a clear answer
When you call, a dispatcher should ask where you are, what's locked and whether anyone is in danger. They should tell you roughly when someone can arrive and what it will cost. If they won't give a price, call someone else.
Safety while you wait
Wait somewhere well lit: a lobby, a neighbor's porch, a nearby open business. If you feel unsafe, call 911.
Arriving prepared
The technician should come in a vehicle stocked with tools for most residential locks, show ID and ask for yours. Expect to prove you live there, with ID, mail or a lease, or a neighbor who can vouch for you.
No surprises on price
The price quoted on the phone should be the price you pay unless something unexpected comes up, and if it does, the technician should explain and agree the change with you before going on.
Getting you in
For most standard locks, entry is done without damage. If the lock is high-security or broken, the technician should explain the options before drilling.
Before they leave
If your key is lost, ask about rekeying while the technician is there. And save the number for next time.
