Lost your keys? Three questions to ask
- Was your address with the keys? If a wallet, ID or tagged key ring went too, assume someone could find your door and rekey promptly.
- Do you have a working spare? If so, we can cut copies from it; if not, we can make a key from the lock itself.
- Did you lose a car key or fob as well? Car keys need the vehicle's details and proof of ownership.
Rekey instead of replacing
Rekeying swaps the pins inside your existing lock so the lost key no longer works. It is quicker and costs less than new hardware, and you keep locks you already like.
A spare-key plan that works
Hide-a-key rocks are the first place a burglar checks. Better options: leave a spare with a trusted neighbor or family member, use a lockbox with a code you change, or fit a keypad deadbolt so a code replaces the spare entirely.
- Key duplication for standard keys
- Rekeying after lost or stolen keys
- Keypad deadbolts
- House, apartment and car lockouts
When lost keys include a car key
Losing a key ring often means losing a car key or fob along with house keys. Write down your vehicle's year, make, model and VIN (it's on your registration and insurance card) before you call, so we can check whether a replacement can be cut and programmed on site. Some vehicles can have the lost key erased from the car's memory so it no longer starts the engine.
For business owners, a lost office key is a good reason to review who else holds keys and whether a rekey is due.
Questions from 07308
Can you make a key without the original?
For most door locks, yes. We decode or impression the lock and cut a key to match.
Should I rekey if I find my keys a day later?
If they were out of your hands somewhere public with your address, rekeying is the cautious choice.
Can a lost car key be disabled?
On many vehicles, programming a new key lets us erase lost keys from the car's memory. It depends on the make and model.
